What do people need in life to feel alive?
According to renowned coach and speaker, Anthony Robbins, whether you love him or loathe him, success and happiness can be found by meeting certain needs that are fundamental to us human beings. Tony concludes that humans are motivated by, or can be motivated by, the desire to fulfil these six core human needs. Once we develop a greater awareness around this we can create an inner peace and harmony in our lives and that to me sounds lush!
So what are they? Fancy guessing first?
The first four of the six needs are defined as the needs of the personality or achievement;
*Certainty– the need for security, stability, safety, order, predictability, consistency and control
*Uncertainty– the need for variety, surprise, excitement, challenges, chaos, difference, adventure, change and novelty
These two needs work together and if there is an imbalance in one you could experience a desire for more of the other.
Next we have;
*Significance– the need to have meaning, be special, be wanted, be loved, to have a sense of importance and worth
*Love and Connection– the need for communication, unification, approval and attachment, to feel connected with someone, to be intimate with someone and be loved by other human beings
These two needs also work together as if you spend too much time gaining significance, you may have trouble finding deep intimate relationships that thrive on love and connection…think workaholics!
The final two needs are defined as the needs of the spirit and are the bones or structure of happiness and fulfilment;
*Growth– the need for constant emotional, intellectual and spiritual development
*Contribution– the need to give beyond ourselves, care, protect and serve others
Just simply knowing this is a real game changer for many people as it gives us an insight into why we do what we do. Whatever goal you are chasing or whatever emotion you are seeking- whether it’s building a business, getting married, raising a family or traveling the world alone, every one of us has these six core needs that make us tick and drive our behaviours. We each value and prioritise these needs in different ways and each of us have beliefs about what it means to satisfy those needs. We can take back control of our lives and even learn how to create new patterns that lead to LASTING fulfilment. AWESOME!
Learning what your top two needs are, Tony says, determines your direction in life. We can meet the needs in a positive, neutral or negative ways and people will give up their goals and dreams to meet their needs!
How crazy is that?
I recently completed an on-line test that showed me the needs that resonate the most with me and although I was not at all surprised, it did confirm what I thought I knew about myself. If you would like to do it yourself, even just for the fun of doing an on-line quiz, here it is;

Knowing what makes us tick really does help us understand our lives and ourselves and leads to those simple yet rewarding ahh hahh moments that allow us to relax, let go and enjoy the journey. It also shows us why we feel dissatisfied with our lives or why we feel that something is missing and why we go chasing stuff like the perfect partner or travel or daily routines and habits.
So as we arrive at the end of 2018 and before you start making plans for 2019 why don’t you consider your needs, do the test and then see what you can bring into your life in 2019 that will meet your individual basic human needs, see you thriving and not just surviving and make life just that little bit more simple in the process!
As always, I would love to hear what you think and what you discover about yourself.
Above all, may you find peace and joy knowing yourself just that little bit better!
